What is a Podcast Trailer? And Why Should I Have One?

Planning the launch of your podcast can be a little daunting. You've got a list of things you need to research and you're thinking is this just a little too hard? I'll let you in on a little secret - it's not, and you've got this.

But, like most things a little planning goes a long way. And something a lot of people forget in their plan or are maybe not aware that it should be in their plan is a podcast trailer.

So, what is a podcast trailer?

A podcast trailer is basically an elevator pitch to pretty music explaining why your future audience should listen to your podcast. You have 60 seconds to wow them into pressing 'Follow' or subscribing to your email list to be notified when the episodes are going live. Once uploaded, you can share it to your social media to let your listeners know what to expect from your upcoming podcast launch.

Why should you have a podcast trailer?

There's two main reasons I tell my launch clients to create a podcast trailer. The first is that you can gain traction and excitement within your existing community by giving them a sneak peek of whats to come. And the second is that it gets your availability on the big directories Spotify, Apple & Google (if they're connected to your hosting platform). Until you post anything on your podcast, you're basically letting that name and URL open free for anyone to take for grabs.

What to include in your podcast trailer

  • Introduce yourself

  • What's your background

  • What inspired you to make the podcast

  • What to expect from the show

  • Who your guests will be

  • Who the podcast is for

  • How often they will hear you

  • And don't forget to include a call to action!

You don't need to do ALL of these, but as much information as possible is a great idea.
